Behind the Mix: Sound Production for Open AI GPT-Live Campaign

In the highly anticipated Open AI GPT-Live campaign, the auditory experience plays a pivotal role. It shapes viewer perception and brand credibility.

This blog post offers an in-depth look at my Production Sound Mixer and Recordist workflow. Additionally, it highlights the technical decisions, artistry, and meticulous attention to detail that elevate the campaign’s sonic identity.

Project overview

The initiative centers on delivering a polished, immersive audio experience that aligns with Open AI’s cutting-edge brand narrative. The production required pristine dialogue capture. The objectives were clear: retain intelligibility in diverse environments, preserve natural timbre, and create a compelling sonic signature for GPT-Live.

Technical approach to recording

  • Location scouting and soundproofing assessments to anticipate ambiance and reduce leakage.
  • Strategic placement of hidden lavaliere mics to minimize clothes rustling and preserve optimal tonality of talent. Shotgun mic to preserve natural timbre of talent as well as capture device audio.
  • Use of wind protection and shock isolation to minimize handling noise in field shoots.
  • Real-time coordination with the director and A-camera team to ensure seamless coverage and minimal retakes.

Equipment and signal chain

  • Microphones: DPA 6060 lavaliere microphones discreetly hidden on talent combined with DPA 4017b Shotgun mic above
  • Location Sound Mixer/Recorder: Zaxcom Nova provided clean, low-noise preamps as well as a fully digital signal chain from talent transmitter to recorder, ensuring clean audio.
  • Monitoring: calibrated headphones with active noise cancellation to hear only what is coming through the mics.
  • Accessories: pop filters, windshields, and shock mounts selected based on scene requirements to preserve performance and intelligibility.
  • Recording format: high-resolution multi-channel captures with redundancy to safeguard against data loss.

Workflow and collaboration

  • Pre-production wardrobe and microphone placement planning to minimize visual-footprint while optimizing sound.
  • Post-production hand-off with a clearly documented sound report and notes

Challenges and solutions

  • Challenge: variable environmental noise in live environments.
Solution: close miking as much as possible, riding the frame line. Noise reduction tools in audio post.

Results and impact

  • Achieved crystal-clear dialogue that remains intelligible even during high-energy sequences.
  • The mix maintains a cinematic feel while reinforcing GPT-Live’s futuristic branding.
  • Positive feedback from the client emphasized the fidelity of sound and the perceived sophistication of the campaign.

Lessons learned

  • Early collaboration with directors and editors accelerates problem-solving and preserves creative intent.
  • Maintaining a well-documented signal chain reduces post-production turnaround time.
  • Continuous quality checks in between takes.
