The Sound Design, Dialog Editing and Mixing for The Garden
The Garden, a short film by Josh Lehman, stands as a testament to meticulous sound craft, where each sonic choice supports the narrative and emotional arc. I served as the sound editor, designer, and re-recording mixer, guiding the auditory landscape through to the final mix.
Dialog editing and restoration: care and craftsmanship
A central pillar of the film’s sonic identity rests on dialog integrity. The meadow sequence presented a challenge. Heavily distorted dialogue was captured by an inexperienced production sound mixer. The director entrusted me with salvaging the rough dialog. Initially, ADR was considered to replace the problematic lines. However, the initial attempt felt incongruent with the film’s organic texture and real-time intimacy. This pushed us to invest additional time in cleaning up the production sound. Carefully de-clipping, noise reduction, and spectral restoration preserved the natural cadence and breath of the actors. The meadow dialogue then felt authentically recorded, preserving performance nuance that ADR could not replicate.
Crafting the sonic identity
Beyond dialog, the film’s sound design threads in atmospheric textures, subtle room tones, and environmental cues that ground the viewer in the story world.
